Counselling is a process whereby someone in need of help talks through their concerns with another who is trained to listen attentively, to understand and empathise, to respect and accept, and to encourage them to make plans, decisions and adjustments for themselves. Effective counselling takes place in the context of a supportive professional relationship.
Counselling can be particularly helpful when we are faced with choices or changes that may be complex or involve personal compromises. If we have become a little confused about ourselves or life counselling may help us to regain a sense of direction and purpose.
Examples of concerns that may be good to explore in counselling would include; traumas, career change, job loss, bereavement, relationship issues, loneliness, ageing, identity issues.
Counselling normally occurs on a regular once a week basis. Sometimes a short series of sessions is all that is needed to help us function more effectively.
It is a good idea to try a single session first and see how you get on.
